Museum Open House Reveals Some Answers

Museum Open House Reveals Some Answers
Nearly 75 people attended the Southern California Medical Museum's 26th Anniversary and 11th Annual Open House on Apr. 27 to hear an excellent, informative and often amusing presentation, "Quackery or Not." Following an introduction by Historical Committee Chair Elliot Weinstein, who dressed in period costume as "Dr. W," San Bernardino County Medical Society Historical Committee members Stanley Korfmacher, MD, and Hans Davidson, MD, discussed examples of quackery currently in the marketplace and displayed such items as electrical machines that "soothe your nerves and restore vitality," sparking devices that claimed to cure everything from baldness to rheumatism, belts that "return your manliness" and vibrators that "stamp out hysteria," as well as tonics, lancets, cupping glasses and other questionable health items. Members of the SBCMS Alliance provided invaluable assistance, serving as hostesses and greeters.
