Assisting in the Search for a Missing Hiker
By SBCMS Staff | Published  03/1/2008 | San Bernardino County Medical Society , 03 March
Searching for a missing hiker.

On Friday, Jan. 11, Corporal Bryan Lane called for volunteers of the San Bernardino County Medical Reserve Corp to help with the search for a missing hiker. In his role as the Incident Commander of the Green Valley Lake search for missing hiker Dean Christy and his position as Volunteer Coordinator between the MRC and the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department, he knew a large number of search and rescue personnel would be on the mountain over the weekend. He asked for volunteers from the MRC to stand by at the command post in Green Valley Lake Fire Station to assist any of the searchers in case of injury or illness in the strenuous and changing conditions on the mountain.

Brenda Brennan, RN and Aaron Rubin, MD were on duty on Saturday, January 12, and Paul Whiteside, MD on Sunday, January 13. All are members of the Executive Board of the MRC. Though no significant events occurred during the activation, all agreed that important contacts were made with the search and rescue agencies that responded to the massive search. The mission of the MRC during these events is still being determined, but the value of having trained MRC members providing aid could be of benefit in allowing search personnel to remain active and safe.
