In response to repeated physician calls about Medicare Part D, the Los Angeles County Medical Association hosted a series of seminars on the new prescription drug benefit this past fall. Presented by Catalina Ramirez, director of economic advocacy, and Faye Mosley, director of member services, the meetings taught physicians how Medicare Part D works.

Physicians and their staff members attended the seminars, which were held at St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach, Suburban Medical Center of Promise Hospital in Paramount and at the Armenian American Medical Society of California.

The two-hour seminar consisted of a PowerPoint presentation, a handout and a Q&A session.

Physicians said that Ramirez and Mosley cleared up misconceptions and offered helpful ways to educate patients on choosing a prescription drug plan. They also instructed doctors to encourage patients to find out which medications are covered under each plan and how much they cost. There are 37 different healthcare organizations making prescription drug plans available in California.

As long as physicians request the seminars, LACMA will continue to host the educational events through 2006, Ramirez said.
