On Oct. 25, 2006, the Riverside County Medical Association recognized three of its members and one longtime staffer for their contributions and achievements. More information about each honoree is below. Congratulations!
Outstanding Contribution to Organized Medicine Award
A.R. (Tony) Silva, MD
Dr. Silva, a board-certified general surgeon and oncologist in Corona, has been a member of the RCMA, the California Medical Association and the American Medical Association for 39 years. Dr. Silva served as RCMA president-elect in 1987 and president in 1988. Since 1995, he has been of service as an RCMA councilor. Dr. Silva was also a CMA alternate delegate from 1987-95.
In addition, Dr. Silva has served on a variety of RCMA committees, including the Postgraduate Committee, 1969-71; Mediation and Medical Care Committee, 1976-87; Medical Services Committee, 1978-83; Credentials Committee, 1984-87; Executive Committee, 1987-89; and the Medical Review and Advisory Committee, 2000-present.
Dr. Silva's medical credentials include being a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery; a fellow of the American College of Surgeons; and a fellow of the American Society of Abdominal Surgeons. He is also associated with the Pan Pacific Surgical Association, Pan American Medical Association, American Association of Foreign Medical Graduates, Royal Society of Medicine, Tri-County Surgical Society of Southern California, and the American Cancer Society, Inland Empire Unit.
Outstanding Contribution to Medicine Award
Vien Doan, DO
A family practitioner in Riverside, Dr. Doan travels annually to Vietnam with a contingent of physicians, dentists, optometrists and other allied practitioners. The Good Samaritan Medical Ministry, a nonprofit organization that Dr. Doan founded, sponsors the volunteers. He is also medical director of the Riverside group.
The number of people traveling with Dr. Doan has grown from five to 80 since the first trip in 1999. They travel through the southern and northern parts of Vietnam going to remote villages where they provide treatment to those lacking medical care. Services provided include primary care, ultrasounds and EKGs, as well as some specialty care and minor surgery.
Outstanding Contribution to the Community Award
Frank Curry, MD
Dr. Curry is a board-certified emergency medicine physician in Indio. He serves as vice chairman of the board of John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital and chief of the Department of Emergency Medicine.
Active in his community, Dr. Curry was instrumental in creating Santa Rosa del Valle Foundation, a nonprofit group that purchased mobile healthcare units to serve migrant farm labor camps. He is a member of the Child Abuse and Neglect Task Force for Riverside County and previously served as chairman of the board for the Indio Chamber of Commerce.

Mary Barnes
Barnes is associate director of the RCMA. She has served in a variety of capacities since 1979 and excels in association management.
